Robert Beck is a former musician, now miserably stuck in a teaching job he barely shows up for. Rauli is an outsider student with musical talent so powerful that when Beck hears him, it relights a flame that’s been dead for years. He takes the youngster under his wings, writing songs, setting up gigs, and recording a demo he passes along to his former bandmate, who now works at Universal Records. The problem is, the label loves Rauli but isn’t interested in Beck. Keeping this a secret from Rauli, Beck embarks on a mission to find another route to their success. In the process, he alienates his girlfriend, who is struggling with her own unfulfilled ambitions. What began as a kind gesture to help out a gifted teenager has now become one man’s obsessive battle for a second chance at a failed dream. When Rauli and Beck join a friend on a life-altering road trip, they discover they’ve both been hiding something. BECK’S LAST SUMMER is a profound and earnest dramedy, affirming that finding oneself can be a lifelong journey. (In English and German with subtitles) –E.F.
