Still reeling from a lack of closure after her brother’s death, Mae has channeled her pain into rebellion. Her relationship with her mother has soured, and she spends her time with a rowdy group of punks, drinking heavily and tagging the walls of Vienna with graffiti. The fun and games finally come to an end when Mae is arrested and sentenced to community service at the local AIDS clinic. Her life begins to change when she meets a patient named Paul. The two become smitten, and when Mae is booted from the run down compound her buddies share, she moves into Paul’s apartment. Despite skepticism from friends and family, their relationship blooms. Her cold, standoffish attitude begins to thaw, and her gloomy view of the world is filled with hope. As Paul’s life is ending, Mae is reborn. But, faced again with death, will she grow from the experience or return to an aimless life of getting into trouble? CHUCKS is a beautiful testament to the enduring strength of the human spirit and love’s incredible ability to conquer all. (In German with subtitles) –E.F.
