When beginning work on your newest scholarly studies you need silence, solitude, and maybe a lake view. What you don’t need is a bunker in the middle of the German woods where the host family consists of a control-freak father and a mother who insists that the alien overlord living in her leg is preparing their child to be President of the United States (aliens, evidently, have a very loose interpretation of our nation’s laws). When a young nameless student is invited to the titular bunker for peace and quiet so he can begin his work, he unwittingly becomes tutor to Klaus, the host family’s eight-year-old son who looks more like a 30-year-old retired Oompa Loompa from a famous chocolate factory. DER BUNKER is a fascinating comedy with socio-analytical overtures while simultaneously being a psychological thriller with comedic timing. The longer he stays, the deeper Student gets into the family’s clutches and, thanks to the skillful direction of Nikias Chryssos, the audience finds itself just as entrenched. Creepy, gleefully acted, and the best kind of mad, DER BUNKER may be the one movie that makes you go home to learn your capital cities. (In German with subtitles) –T.W.
