Ryan is a career-driven fashion stylist whose dream is to get the cover of a prestigious magazine. When the cover is assigned to a rival, Ryan is given a consolation assignment: to re-style Ning, a rising young Asian actor, for his introduction to American audiences. Ryan, who is also Asian but American-raised and openly gay, clashes immediately with the culturally proud and very machismo Ning. The manly and handsome actor makes no effort to hide his homophobic reactions. Ryan is outraged at having to endure these attitudes, but he knows this assignment will make or end his career. With varying success, Ryan tries to juggle warring values and public images with the demands and extreme snarkiness of the fashion industry. But then one night Ryan convinces Ning to go out clubbing and everything changes in an instant. Mixing a gloriously old-fashioned romantic comedy of star-crossed lovers with a sharply funny and intelligent look at clashing values, FRONT COVER serves up a heart-tugging, erotic, and seductively charming treat. –C.R.
