All Liza wants is to find the man of her dreams in a burger shop—just like she read would happen in her favorite romance novel. A 30-year-old home-care nurse for a hawkish bedridden woman in Hungary, the mousy Liza has spent her life largely in solitude except for her one and only friend: the ghost of a dead Japanese pop star named Tomy Tani. When she finally travels out to the local diner in hopes of meeting the suitor of her dreams, Tomy’s jealousy spawns a sinister sabotage plan. Through director Károly Ujj Mészáros’s bold, vibrant world, Liza navigates the normal clumsiness of romance with a hilariously off-beat menagerie of curious men. Except normal for Liza means anyone who shows her a spark of desire drops dead. As she begins to discover she’s been turned into a fox-fairy, the peculiar trail of brutal deaths inexplicably surrounding her puts her in the middle of a police investigation led by the increasingly smitten Sergeant Zoltan. Can he crack the case of Liza’s curse in this dark comedy, or will her every Prince Charming meet a bloody demise in LIZA THE FOX-FAIRY? (In Hungarian and Japanese with subtitles) –N.D.
