John Lake is an eager American doctor, working as a volunteer in Laos. When he loses a patient, his boss forces him to take a vacation. After a night of drinks at the bar, John stumbles home to find a young woman being sexually assaulted on the side of the road. Responding with quick anger, he goes after her attacker, brutally pummeling him to death. When he realizes what he’s done, he flees—only to return to the scene the next morning to look for his lost wallet. Unfortunately, it’s nowhere to be found. Panicked, John tries to get out of Laos but is stopped by police who have found the body and are suspicious of his black eye. He narrowly escapes detention, becoming a fugitive on the run. The hunt for John becomes big news, especially when the identity of the deceased is revealed. Can he find his way back to America, and, if so, at what cost? The high-energy RIVER will leave you on the edge of your seat, rooting for a man whose best intentions turned him into a wanted criminal. (In English, French, Lao, and Thai with subtitles) –E.F.
