Jamie’s afternoon should be easy—he needs to pick up the lighter fluid he left behind at the store and make it back in time for the cookout. But it’s a long way to the store… maybe he can borrow his roommate’s bike? On the way, some road rage guy in a pickup truck heckles him on the side of the road. Oh well, he’ll never see him again. Inside the store, the clerk asks Jamie for his receipt. Jamie realizes he lost it because the clerk handed it to him in a weird way and it slipped out of his pocket. He’ll have to buy another can of lighter fluid. There goes his last five dollars. As he prepares to bike home—wait a minute, what happened to the bike? That road rage guy ran over it? This isn’t cool at all. Thus starts Andre Hyland’s spot-on comedy about a 4th of July cookout gone ridiculously wrong. THE 4TH delivers a heady dose of earnest humor. –C.P.
