THE REFLEKTOR TAPES chronicles the making of Arcade Fire’s Grammy-nominated 2013 album, Reflektor. Produced by LCD Soundsystem frontman, James Murphy, the record was a critical darling, with Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, and Stereogum placing it high on their year-end lists. It was dancier than previous efforts, but its lyrics drew on a theme of isolation and death. Lead singer Win Butler says he was heavily influenced by “Black Orpheus,” a 1959 Brazilian film that put a contemporary spin on the Greek legend. In his documentary, director Kahlil Joseph uniquely charts the recording process with a dizzying audio-visual experience that will overload your senses. It’s not a biographical film. It’s not a music video. It’s not really a concert film either. Instead, it’s a psychedelic blend of all three. The journey follows them to Jamaica, Montréal, and Haiti; the sounds and styles of each place play a huge role in shaping the album’s vibe. Whether you’re familiar with Arcade Fire or not, this inventive movie stands alone as a truly surreal work of art. –E.F.
