At first glance, Charles, Sebastian, and their friends live in a world far removed from most of us. They reside in rooms lined with priceless works of renaissance art and in buildings that overlook sweeping vistas of Central Park. But there’s something hiding beneath the sheen of their haute culture. Sebastian, whose father swindled millions from the masses in a Madoff-style scheme, is now known as “the son of the most hated man in New York.” His father’s former colleagues, the press, and his neighbors all equally shun him. Charles may be the only person who loves Sebastian, always putting Sebastian’s needs before his own, even though he clearly doesn’t return Charles’ affections. But when Tim, a handsome older nightclub pianist from Lebanon, enters Charles’ life, he has his first real opportunity for happiness. Only his lingering obsession with Sebastian stands in his way. Notably influenced by Brideshead Revisited, this gentle romance features remarkable panoramas of wintery New York and wonderful close-ups of its breakthrough cast in outstanding performances. –C.P.
