Christy Lam is about to turn 30. Beautiful and successful, she runs her life with precision and efficiency. Until now. Just as she receives an unexpected promotion, one with greatly increased responsibility, she is given an eviction notice. Unwilling to move in with her boyfriend (and his hostile cat) she is forced to temporarily sublet an apartment. This apartment belongs to Wong Tin-Lok, a joyous young woman who is everything Christy is not: plain-looking, care-free, and happy. Thirty, it is said, is the transitional age for a woman. Christy hasn’t taken much time to consider where her life is leading. As she reads Wong’s diaries and lives among the evidence of a life fully lived, Christy finds the eve of her 30th birthday may indeed be transitional in ways she never expected. 29 + 1 is a sparkling, bright, and uplifting film. It is about those amazing, and sometimes frightening, moments we all encounter when we recognize what is truly important in life and discover who we really are. (In Cantonese with subtitles) —C.R.
