There is a Moldovan legend about a lovely princess whom many men desired. She had but One Love, the Sun. The Sun wed her and took her to the sky, but he burnt her with his caresses and her ashes fell to Earth. Anishoara is a beautiful 15-year-old farm girl in Moldova. She is wooed by both young and old, without success. Her Sun is Dragosh, a handsome local boy who rides a motorcycle and has captured Anishoara’s mind and heart. Dragosh acts as if he means to complete the story and Anishoara believes, as yet, in happy endings. ANISHOARA takes us through all the seasons of this deceptively simple story. This movie will enchant with its singular rhythms and glow, filmed with the hypnotic beauty of a fairy tale. Though Anishoara wishes it were, this won’t be a fairy tale. A few ashes may darken her Sun. And her happy ending, if it comes, may not be quite the one she expects. (In Romanian with subtitles) —C.R.
