When Lexi was three years old, her father walked out the front door and abandoned her family. Decades later, unmoored by career woes, her mother’s death, and the breakdown of her marriage, she travels from England to L.A. to seek out her father and find out why he left. After arriving in California, Lexi tracks down her father’s second family—including an uptight half-sister she’s never met and her father’s terminally ill second ex-wife, with whom Lexi secretively attempts to form a bond. In the meantime, Lexi tries to numb the pain by compensating for her husband’s absence with unsuccessful casual sexual encounters. NO LIGHT AND NO LAND ANYWHERE is a heartbreaking look at what it’s like to become untethered from everything you’ve known. But still, the film speaks to the power of second chances—and how hitting rock bottom is sometimes the only way to find a better path forward. —A.Z.
