Thana was once an acclaimed architect, known for his work on a popular high-rise in Bangkok. But that was decades ago. These days he’s considered old and washed-up by his company’s new boss. At home things aren’t much different. His wife is unfulfilled in bed, and “loving” is not a word you would use to describe their present relationship. One day while aimlessly strolling through the city, Thana sees a street hustler with an elephant. He recognizes the animal as his childhood pet Popeye. Amazed by their unexpected reunion, Thana pledges to return the elephant to his old family farm, where his uncle can care for him. Their road trip from the city to rural Thailand is an incredible journey. Along the way they meet a cast of zany drifters, each providing Thana with some much-needed laughs and companionship. His incredible bond with the magnificent Popeye also grows as the adventure continues. Just when he thought his boring life was all he had to look forward to, Thana’s wild ride in POP AYE is the lightning rod he desperately needs. (In Thai with subtitles) —E.F.
