Christopher “Quest” Rainey runs a hip-hop recording studio out of his home in North Philadelphia. Assisted by his wife Christine’s “Ma Quest,” the couple offers a safe space for artists as the studio provides solace from the depressing urban decay outside its walls. Encouraging their creativity and forming personal relationships with the musicians who come to record, the Raineys have transformed the lives of those who may have otherwise found themselves on a very different path. They’ve stayed committed to the project despite the rigors of raising a family and dealing with the ups and downs of life in poverty. Their strength is tested, though, when the dangerous reality of their neighborhood leads to a family tragedy. But when times get hard, the Raineys find support from the countless number of people they’ve touched throughout the years. Filmed over the course of a decade, QUEST is a beautiful portrait of two selfless human beings who use the power of music to lift and heal their community. The documentary is incredibly moving, illuminated by the Raineys’ inspiring love story and unflinching hope. —E.F.
