The distance between twin brothers Nick and Chris Capozziello isn’t geographic. Nick was born with cerebral palsy. While Chris grew up healthy and became a freelance photojournalist, Nick grew up with increasingly debilitating physical challenges and remained home under the care of their parents. Chris carried a life-long guilt about this and decided to document Nick’s challenges in order to be closer to his brother and discover who he really is. THE DISTANCE BEWTEEN US charts that journey. Nick is eager to live on his own, but his ability to do so is questionable. While waiting for special housing to open, Chris takes his brother on a road trip across America. The journey is not only designed to bring Nick closer to the world around him, but also to bring the brothers closer to each other. Nick’s desire to be independent may carry great risk, and Chris knows the time left to close the distance between them is very precious. —C.R.
