“How sexy are we gonna get here?” THE UNTOLD TALES OF ARMISTEAD MAUPIN showcases the life of the popular San Francisco writer and author who rose to fame for his entertaining yet controversial “Tales of the City” newspaper column in the San Francisco Chronicle in the 1970s. What later became a series of novels and a PBS miniseries, his fictional articles gradually incorporated gay and transgendered storylines to give the growing LGBT community of San Francisco characters to whom they could relate. The film features candid talks with Maupin about intimate details of his life including his revolutionary writing, conservative Southern roots, steamy sexual encounters, and ongoing love affair with his husband and the city of San Francisco, then and now. Notable celebrities such as actors Laura Linney and Sir Ian McKellen, comedian Margaret Cho, and author Amy Tan weigh in with their personal accounts of how Maupin and his body of work have made a lasting impression on their lives and the world. —A.B.
