When Corey Pegues was a young man in the 1980s, he was a member of one of New York City’s most infamous gangs, the Supreme Team. Looking for a path away from crime, Pegues left it all behind to complete his education and join the military. When he returned, to the surprise of everyone, Pegues enrolled in the police academy. Not only did Pegues become a police officer, but also during his 21-year career he was promoted all the way to Deputy Inspector and assigned the Commanding Officer of New York’s 67th precinct—one of the most violent precincts in the state. As a celebrated Commander and a leader in the community, Pegues had made it so far from where he came; his career was the epitome of the American dream. But when Pegues began to speak publicly in support of police reform, he became a target within the police department, and details of his sordid past were thrust into the spotlight. A dynamic and compelling portrait documentary, A COPS AND ROBBERS STORY takes viewers through the incredible life and living legacy of Corey Pegues. — G.S.
