A Song Called Hate

In 2019 the Icelandic anti-capitalist and BDSM techno group Hatari (meaning “Hater”) won the honor of representing their home country at that year’s Eurovision Song Contest in Tel Aviv. As pro-Palestinian artists who had just been handed a global platform in the middle of Israel, they clearly had much to contend with before their performance. Although they first saw the success of their outrageous, leather-clad band and ironic single Hate Will Prevail as more of a “joke gone too far,” the band understood any decision they made would be accompanied by a host of political and artistic implications. Do they boycott the contest? Or participate and disrupt? If so—how? Does intent matter without action? Can one engage in a system while attempting to dismantle it? Through criticism and support, A SONG CALLED HATE documents Hatari’s journey from Iceland to Israel, the West Bank, and back, all along questioning the multi-pronged role of artists and to what level they are responsible for engaging with the world at large. (In English and Icelandic with subtitles) — D.O.
