The suburbs of Rome are not the idyllic environment residents seek. Although this tight-knit collection of families frequently finds themselves in close quarters—birthday parties, shared family dinners, afternoons in the pool—their relationships are anything but civil. Mothers are detached and oblivious, fathers lust over their neighbors’ wives, and blame is aimed squarely at the families with the higher-paying jobs, the kids with better grades, or fill-in-the-blank for a number of other insecurities. Conversations are reactive and tempers are explosive. But these parents fail to recognize the real collateral damage: their children. BAD TALES follows the tumultuous web of relationships between so-called adults and their coming-of-age offspring, who are just trying to survive their way through adolescence in the wake of their toxic role models. Dark and indelibly haunting, this drama elicits visceral frustration for those who, blinded by their own self-loathing, have no idea the worst is yet to come. (In Italian with subtitles) — A.B.
