BARBARA LEE: SPEAKING TRUTH TO POWER is an inspiring profile of trailblazer Barbara Lee, the highest-ranking African American woman in the U.S. Congress, and the obstacles she overcame to forge a political career dedicated to racial and social justice. As a divorced, single mother of two boys and a domestic violence survivor, Lee is acutely aware of how government programs can help everyday people rise out of poverty. Focusing on policy reform and legislation that addresses social inequities' root causes, she's maintained her moral convictions throughout her tenure. Lee made national headlines and faced extreme backlash when she was the lone vote in opposition to a bill that, following the September 11th attacks, significantly broadened the U.S. President's authorization of military force without Congressional approval. In this illuminating documentary, gripping interviews from the late Rep. John Lewis, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, CNN commentator Van Jones, and many more recount how Lee became a steadfast voice for human rights, peace, and economic and racial justice. – R.R.
