A brutal psychological thriller like no other, COMING HOME IN THE DARK ushers the viewer into a nightmarish hellscape that throttles you to the very edge of your seat. Set in the swooping landscapes of Greater Wellington, New Zealand, the film follows married couple Hoaggie and Jill and their two adolescent sons on a family road trip where they are encroached upon by two mysterious drifters. This tense encounter escalates into a shocking act of violence that triggers one of the most unrelenting cinematic experiences of the year—part heart-pounding survival drama, part meditation on the pathos of childhood trauma. However, not everything is as it first appears and the story writhes with moral quandaries and human complexities as it surges toward its harrowing finale. Masterfully directed, this debut feature announces Kiwi filmmaker James Ashcroft as an exciting new voice in the horror arena, offering the viewer a bone-chilling ride through to the very last frame. —R.J.T.
