When Nikola lost his job two years ago, his severance package never came. Without consistent work, he has struggled to put food on the table for his wife and two children. They have no food, no electricity, no running water… and then things get even worse. In an act of desperation, Nikola’s distraught wife shows up at his previous place of employment, threatening to set herself and her children on fire if they don’t pay her husband the money he is owed. In the aftermath of his wife's breakdown, Nikola’s children are taken by social services and put into foster care. Social services tells Nikola he needs to meet certain standards before the children can go home with him. And although Nikola meets all of their initial requirements, the corrupt social service staff won’t even let him talk to his children on the phone, let alone grant him custody. Out of patience and out of options, Nikola sets off on foot across Serbia for Belgrade, where he demands to present his appeal directly to the national minister. Infuriating and compelling, FATHER is a story of love and resilience in the face of profound injustice. (In Serbian with subtitles) — G.S.
