Run Time: 87 minutes
A wife and husband run a modest hotel in a remote Himalayan mountain village. The wife Chandra's strong-willed resourcefulness has made her the family's sole provider but causes friction with her alcoholic husband, who's left feeling emasculated. Their relationship strains further when the couple clashes over the best treatment for their son who has a disability and must use a wheelchair. While Chandra stringently saves to pay for his medical treatments and to build a road to improve their access to doctors, her husband's convinced only an expensive religious ceremony can heal their son. This intense family drama is a study on gender and the impact of modernization in a rapidly changing India reconciling traditional and contemporary ideologies. Beautifully filmed, the cinematography of FIRE IN THE MOUNTAINS captures images of lush greenery and vibrant waterfalls that contrast a picturesque mountain escape with rising family tensions. When characters' respective blind faith in diverging religious, social, and medical conventions collide, growing anger and resentment threaten to boil over. This stunning film by self-taught filmmaker Ajitpal Singh is his feature debut. (In Hindi with subtitles) — R.R.
