Mitzi is getting a divorce, smoking again, and mostly envisioning a climate apocalypse in her future. It’s also her birthday. When old friends reunite to throw her a surprise party at the seaside cottage they visited in their youth, Mitzi just wants to be left alone. But as the nostalgia sets in and old flames reignite, the thirty-somethings seem to forget their ages and throw off adulthood, even if just for a weekend. What ensues is a comedy of manners and arrested development involving secret hook-ups, mid-life crises, and lots and lots of booze. As old drama and regrets are unearthed, the friends are forced to reckon with their pasts in ways that may affect their vision of the future. Charming performances—including those of Emmi Parviainen and Eero Milonoff (“Border”)—highlight this biting take on a classic setup. Baroque in its music and its emotions, GAMES PEOPLE PLAY is a whirlwind debut that stresses the importance of being present...the world could end at any moment, after all.
