Gypsy Vale, 25, is a foul-mouthed, corset-wearing Foto Hut attendant who worships Stevie Nicks. Her best friend Clive Webb is a recently out high school senior with a Cure obsession and a fear of sex. Together they’re bored Ohio goths with dreams of bigger things. When the pair learns of the “Night of 1,000 Stevies,” a Nicks-inspired performance contest at a nightclub in New York City, they know this is Gypsy’s chance to show off her rockstar potential. With a suitcase of capes and something to prove, Gypsy and Clive hit the road. From an Amish heartthrob gone rogue to a washed up lounge singer (a sultry cameo from the late, great Karen Black), Gypsy’s path to being the next Stevie Nicks is full of fellow misfits. Like EDGE OF SEVENTEEN and SWAN SONG—the films that bookend director Todd Stephens’s Ohio Trilogy—GYPSY 83 wears its heart on its (bell) sleeve. But this time, the journey takes us out of state, going on a road trip full of suburban angst, young lust, lots of heavy eyeliner, and lessons in unabashedly being yourself. — D.O.
