Experienced Václav Havel's capricious rise from beloved national playwright to political dissident and eventually President of Czechoslovakia. In the summer of 1968, the playwright revels in decreased censorship under Slovak politician Alexander Dub?ek's leadership as he attempts to reform the communist government. Yet, the promise of creative license and newfound freedom is short-lived. Warsaw Pact troops under Soviet command invade and occupy Czechoslovakia to stop Dub?ek's liberal reforms. When Havel refuses to pledge allegiance to the Soviet occupation, he's removed from his theater position, sparking a foray into political activism that will forever change his life. The historic biopic HAVEL is set between 1968 and 1989 and focuses on Havel's two-decade journey from an artist protesting censorship to a political activist undermining an oppressive communist regime and fighting for civil and human rights. Inspired by true events, the film creatively recounts how Václav Havel became a hailed hero of the masses and President of Czechoslovakia after the fall of communism.
