Aided by an organic and percussive score, HONEYDEW’s uncanny atmosphere instantly worms its way into your ear. In this fresh take on the classic road-trip-gone-wrong, Ph.D. candidate Riley is on a camping trip to study sordico, a toxic fungus that once ravaged the surrounding rural community, killing cows and causing madness in the residents that ingested it. Joined by her boyfriend Sam (Sawyer Spielberg), the couple’s excursion is cut short when a disgruntled local orders them off his property. After their car won’t start, they accept refuge from a hospitable old woman and her peculiar adult son. But as hallucinations set in, it becomes clear they sought help at the wrong house. With playfully abrasive editing and a proclivity for the depraved, you won’t be able to look away as HONEYDEW hurtles towards a visceral nightmare of absurd proportions. Hints of “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” “Eraserhead,” “Freaks,” and more run throughout this sensory-laden horror with such a comically bleak outlook you won’t know whether to laugh or cry—but you’ll definitely squirm. — D.O.
