Fresh out of prison after serving a15-year sentence for armed robbery, Wayland (Pablo Schreiber) makes his way to a Christian halfway house. While mopping floors to earn his keep, it doesn’t take long for Wayland to run into his old high school sweetheart Dolores (Jena Malone), who’s attending a church support group for single mothers. Their spontaneous “meet cute” is symbolic of both how small this Oregon town is and how strong the gravitational pull is between the former lovers, even after all these years. Wasting no time, Wayland moves in with Dolores and her three children, all of whom have different fathers who are no longer in the picture. And while both Wayland and Dolores are looking for a fresh start, the circumstances around their reconnection is hardly idyllic. While Dolores cleans motel rooms and Wayland works a construction job to make ends meet, it still isn’t enough to support Dolores’ children. Unfortunately, financial troubles aren’t their only issues, as tension builds around lost dreams and expectations, leading to a boiling point they may not come back from. Mesmerizing and moving, LORELEI is a working class love story that is as beautiful as it is troublesome. — G.S.
