Stan Brock led quite the life. As a young man he lived off the grid as a cowboy, wrangling cattle through the Amazonian ranches of South America. Then he went on to star in one of America’s most popular wildlife programs, Wild Kingdom. Although Wild Kingdom became one of the highest rated shows on television, Brock eluded fortune and fame, eventually selling off everything he owned and dedicating his life to solving one of the world’s most glaring issues: healthcare. Since 1992 Brock’s nonprofit, Remote Area Medical, has provided over $60 million of free healthcare to hundreds of thousands of people all over the world. From the beginning their motto was, “Go wherever the need is greatest.” While in the past this meant serving patients in the developing world, recently Brock’s clinics have been popping up all across the United States. With so many people lacking basic healthcare in the richest country in the world, Brock made it his mission to not only provide care to those in need, but also to advocate for national healthcare reform. A multilayered, inspirational, and deeply moving documentary, MEDICINE MAN: THE STAN BROCK STORY tells the story of Stan Brock’s legendary life, while simultaneously exposing America’s broken healthcare system and the urgent need for change. — G.S.
