Zed has worked his entire life to make it as a rapper. And he’s made quite a name for himself in New York, rapping about his British-Pakistani upbringing. But for someone who’s created an artistic image around his cultural identity, he’s pretty disconnected from his roots. To many in his community, Zed is seen as a sellout—someone who profits from his culture without walking the talk. On a stopover to visit his semi-estranged family in London right before his much-anticipated European tour, Zed passes out and ends up in the hospital, where he’s diagnosed with a crippling auto-immune disease. With his career about to take off, this news couldn’t have come at a worse time. Clouded with memories and hallucinations, Zed struggles to make sense of his present situation. But while his illness may destroy his career, it may also give Zed an opportunity to connect to and heal his family ties. Co-written and produced by leading actor Riz Ahmed, MOGUL MOWGLI is a riveting drama about the layered complexities of culture clash. (In English and Urdu with subtitles) — G.S.
