In the developing country of Haiti, Dr. Jeff Kempf of Akron Children's Hospital and a team of international doctors revolutionized pediatric cardiac care at St. Damien Pediatric Hospital with the support of charitable partners focused on sustainability and empowerment. Nearly 10% of Haitian children die of largely treatable illnesses before their fifth birthday. With one-third of Haiti’s population under 14 years old, pediatric health improvements are imperative for Haiti's economic, social, and political development. Dr. Kempf guides audiences through a medical mission in Haiti, conducting twelve life-saving heart surgeries while simultaneously training and supporting St. Damien's development of a self-run program. By assisting St. Damien with the necessary resources, the doctors make it possible for the faculty to become the first Haitian hospital capable of offering pediatric cardiac surgeries. OPEN HEARTS reveals how communities can be empowered to self-sufficiency through charitable collaborations that address inequity's root causes. This documentary challenges the conventional concept of charity and illustrates what's possible when humanitarian organizations focus less on dispersing aid and more on strategies that foster independence. – R.R.
