At times the idyllic Slovenian landscape in Miroslav Mandi?’s SANREMO sings with vivid color. But more often than not, shots of the countryside are obscured with haze. Reflecting the cloudy mental state of Bruno, a kind nursing home resident suffering from dementia, the film’s moments of clarity are something to be savored. Bruno is quite the stubborn escape artist, and so the home’s staff keeps a close eye on him. Amongst moments of quiet confusion, we’re given fragments of a bittersweet love story between Bruno and Duša, another resident often found wandering around the sprinklers. Usually meeting as if it were for the first time, the only thing anchoring their connection is Non ho l’età, an Italian song performed at the Sanremo Music Festival in their youth. In Sandi Pavlin’s subtly powerful performance as Bruno, a faint but tender recognition is ever present behind his gaze, making for a touching depiction of an often misrepresented lifestage. Utilizing simple storytelling and clever visual metaphor, SANREMO is a deliberately crafted and gentle work of poetry about the transient and enduring aspects of life.
