At 28-years-old, Lene Marie Fossen has never gone through puberty. Her severe anorexia has prevented her fragile body from fully developing, and her skeletal frame struggles to support itself through even the most mundane of tasks. Fossen is dying. The disease has completely taken over her body and her mind, poisoning her thoughts and choices. For years Fossen has subsisted on nutrition drinks alone, terrified of eating the real food her body desperately needs to survive. On the edge of giving up the will to live entirely, Fossen’s only solace is in her photography. She truly has a talent for capturing people in their raw essence. And the moments behind the camera are her only motivations for venturing out into the real world. But perhaps the most powerful photographs come from her self-portraits. Beautiful, sorrowful, and dark, Fossen’s self-portraits capture the destructive complexity of anorexia. But is her art saving her or sending her deeper into the unclenching jaws of this relentless disorder? A complicated documentary filled with sadness, sickness, and strength, SELF PORTRAIT follows Fossen as she grapples with her demons and desires. (In Norweigan with subtitles) — G.S.
