Jackie and Don Seiden, two lifelong artists from Chicago who have been married for five decades, are getting older. Jackie, who once flourished as an eccentric children’s art teacher and power-dance roller-skater, was known for her peculiar appreciation of deteriorating objects as works of art. Don was a talented sculptor of life-size creations, one of which was a rhinoceros who eventually resided in the front yard of the couple’s pastel-painted home. Now, the two find themselves piddling around the house—Don filling sketchbooks with pencil drawings and Jackie stringing up a cow figurine with dental floss in the kitchen or rearranging a collection of vintage suitcases. The unconventional couple revisits video footage of their younger selves and reminisce on what their minds and bodies were once able to accomplish, as well as their own rocky relationship of half a century. Bittersweet and oddly charming, SO LATE SO SOON explores the inevitable challenges of aging and the inherent fear of losing ourselves and each other. — A.B.
