Like his energetic and impactful debut, “Blindspotting,” Carlos López Estrada’s sophomore feature SUMMERTIME is a love song to the West Coast that blends poetry and hip-hop with themes of home and belonging. Taking place over one summer day in bustling Los Angeles, the film showcases 25 young local poets, using their impassioned slam pieces like a musical does songs. As the teens’ lives intersect across the city, each one is given their moment in the spotlight to pour their heart into intensely personal words. From the afroed Tyris Yelp-reviewing his way around a changing neighborhood to Marquesha gaining the confidence to “rap battle her demons,” moments weave in and out to form a vibrant portrait of a city facing gentrification while fostering a new generation of culturally diverse artists. Spoken word, dance, song, rap, and colorful city street montages come together in a unique form that will make you long for the summer heat as you hear the voices of young Angelinos assert their right to claim their home as their own. (In English, Korean, and Spanish with subtitles) — D.O.
