Rocked by a tragic accident, a remote Aussie community hides its trauma deep within towering fields of sugarcane. From the moment Hanna—an obvious outsider—comes to town, she gets the feeling she’s unwelcome. But her quest is one of a grieving mother who won’t be so easily deterred. Although her young son Joey is said to be the final victim of a serial killer who operated in the area, his is the only body that’s never been recovered. Seeking answers and a sense of closure, she’s blocked at every turn by tight-lipped residents who have their own rather unique relationship with death. As Hanna continues to look where she shouldn’t, she’s only faced with more questions: Where do the neighbors go at night? Who is watching her from among the cane? And why does the town hang glowing red lights as if life depends on it? Set where secrets are closely guarded by both the living and the dead, SWEET RIVER delivers a psychological slow burn about the selfish and self-destructive ways in which grief can manifest. — D.O.
