In 1983 the people of Ireland voted to add an Eighth Amendment to the constitution, giving the unborn an equal right to life as the mother; essentially a constitutional ban on abortion. This amendment has led to a bitter and divisive debate in one of the most deeply Catholic countries on the planet. Women’s rights advocates have gone head-to-head with the conservative church for decades to overturn the amendment. However, the Eighth Amendment didn’t happen in a vacuum. Ireland has a dark and sordid history regarding its mistreatment of unwed mothers dealing with unplanned pregnancies. At the forefront of the fight for women’s reproductive rights is Ailbhe Smyth, a veteran activist in her 70s who will stop at nothing to overturn the Eighth Amendment, and rallies a passionate group of women behind her to take to the streets. A powerful documentary about one of the most restrictive abortion laws in the world, THE 8TH clearly demonstrates the formidable force of a group of women coming together to fight for their rights. — G.S.
