Based on the unbelievable true story, THE AUSCHWITZ REPORT tracks Freddy and Valér, two young Jewish men from Slovakia, on their agonizing attempt to escape the concentration camp in 1944. Each day the men watch, count, and document the number of prisoners delivered to the camp, as well as the daily death toll, to create a paper trail of hard evidence to present to the Slovakian resistance upon a successful escape. When attendance is two shy at the nightly headcount, their fellow prisoners in Barrack 9 remain silent, risking their own lives with the hope of saving many more to come. Starving and injured, Freddy and Valér forge ahead to deliver their appalling proof of rampant genocide to leaders of the Red Cross. This film’s visceral depictions of life within the camp—and the outside world’s hesitation to believe it—will leave its audiences forever changed. To witness the relentless will of these men to spread the truth of such horrendous crimes is truly something to behold. (In Polish with subtitles) — A.B.
