As intense and unsettling as anything onscreen this year, THE DJINN offers a new, disturbing take on a classic cinematic form—the monster movie. Set in 1989, the film follows a young mute boy, Dylan, as he adjusts to life after the loss of his mother. When he and his father move into a new place, Dylan discovers an eerie manuscript titled The Book of Shadows which details a kind of séance that will fulfill one’s deepest desire. One night after his dad leaves for a graveyard shift, Dylan decides to perform the ritual, asking for his one greatest wish: to have a voice. Rather than manifesting his dream into a reality, what instead unfurls is a terrifying shadow of a creature that seems to morbidly shapeshift at every turn. This mysterious entity appears to have one desire only—to find and kill Dylan. With every frame following the frantic eyes of a little boy desperate to survive and set in the confines of a tiny apartment, this stark horror drama rattles the viewer from start to finish. Beware. — R.J.T.
