Ana is an engineering student with exams to worry about. But for one night only she’s the projectionist at the old Cine Opera in Montevideo, Uruguay. Having agreed to cover her aging father’s shift at the theater, she’s certain the night will be a breeze—after all, she’s watched him in action for years. Due to an incessant storm, the audience for that night’s horror screening is rather sparse, which means Ana can focus on her studies while letting the projector run. What could go wrong? Little do they know, a maniac with a knife and a very peculiar appetite is on the loose inside the theater. Little do they know, the front gate is locked and there’s no way out. Creeping under the neon glow of the popcorn machine, the slasher goes undetected as he starts picking off patrons, one by one. With a gleefully twisted performance from Uruguayan horror pioneer Ricardo Islas (whose movie “Frankenstein: Day of the Beast” plays as the film-within-the-film), THE LAST MATINEE (formerly known as Red Screening) is a glorious, giallo-inspired bloodbath packed full of gross-out gags sure to make anyone squeal. (In Spanish with subtitles) — D.O.
