Because of the complicated relationship between the U.S. and Cuba, Cuban baseball players must establish a residence elsewhere in order to be recruited by the Major Leagues. Happy, Carlos, and Baró, three promising ball players, defect from their homeland to enroll in a housing and training program in Costa Rica that advertises a path to high-paying contracts in the States. But their hopes of playing professional baseball and providing for their families back home are perpetually on pause as recruits come and go with no offers to be had. As months go by, the athletes grow suspicious of their shady agent Gus, whose empty promises have gotten them no closer to fulfilling their dreams. Each player must make a decision to stay the course with the program or risk their lives and navigate their own path to America. A documentary much larger than baseball, THE LAST OUT tells the human story of courage, sacrifice, and commitment to family and self to seek a better way of life. (In Spanish with subtitles) — A.B.
