For years, famed director Luchino Visconti traveled the world in search of the perfect boy to play the lead in his acclaimed 1971 film, “Death in Venice.” When Visconti met Björn Andrésen in Stockholm, his exhaustive search finally ended. At 15 years old, Andrésen was precisely what Visconti had been looking for: tall and thin with striking grey eyes, honey-colored hair, and an exquisite bone structure—exactly how the Death in Venice novella described the central character. Thrilled with his discovery, Visconti declared Andrésen to be “the most beautiful boy in the world” thrusting him into international stardom. Vulnerable and sensitive, Björn Andrésen was not prepared for that level of fame. And with no one to protect him, the teenager was led down a dark road, which he tried to make sense of for the rest of his life. An intimate and disquieting portrait documentary, THE MOST BEAUTIFUL BOY IN THE WORLD follows Andrésen, now in his 60s, as he recalls his troubling and tragic journey to adulthood. (In English, French, Italian, Japanese, and Swedish with subtitles) — G.S.
