All her life, Tove Jansson wanted to be known for her paintings. Raised in a family of artists, Jansson was always pushed to pursue fine art by her father, a renowned sculptor. But while she studied, painted, and exhibited her work, Jansson was creating a secret magical world on the side: The Moomins. While Jansson saw these illustrations as a benign distraction from her real work, The Moomins would go on to become a beloved children’s series and an international sensation. Taking many forms, The Moomins can be found today in comic strips, books, theater, film, and television programs all around the world. But the road to success was not linear or easy for Jansson, who always felt she had more to offer than children’s books. Following Jansson in her early years as a struggling artist, TOVE is a fascinating look into the life of one of the most celebrated illustrators of the 20th century. (In English, Swedish, Finnish, and French with subtitles) — G.S.
