“I am awake, and I don’t like what I see.” This sentiment is felt by all the characters living in the utterly grey world of Chino Moya’s thoughtfully constructed debut. An anthology film set against the brutalist landscape of a decaying European dystopia, UNDERGODS plays like a tragic noir. A lingering, ominous atmosphere hangs just below the surface as the film follows its weary and often paranoid characters down rabbit holes that lead everywhere and nowhere. The stories—each bizarre and darkly comic in its own way—weave in and out of one another, creating a layered portrait of humanity in a downward spiral. A man who feels he’s being replaced. Two others who collect bodies, dead or alive, for profit. A surprise reunion that threatens to tear a family apart. Bolstered by whimsical synthesizers and perfectly tuned performances, Moya’s striking vision of a crumbling patriarchy rests snugly between the absurd and the mundane. — D.O.
