Over the last few years, a dangerous drug has emerged on the streets of Istanbul called bonzai. A cheap, synthetic, addictive replacement for marijuana, bonzai is responsible for the most drug-related deaths in Turkey and has ruined countless lives. One of its victims is Fehmi, a talented 19-year-old aspiring rapper who is hopelessly hooked on this deadly street drug. Fehmi and his friend Yunus have spent years writing and recording music together, and they have big dreams of success. But just as their dreams are becoming realized, Fehmi’s addiction becomes worse, jeopardizing everything they’ve worked for. As Fehmi spirals out of control, he meets Devin, a pretty upper-class DJ whom he instantly falls for, giving him a brief respite from the dark hallucinations that have started to take over his mind. But Devin’s love can’t save Fehmi from himself. Featuring music composed by Da Poet, one of the most acclaimed rappers in Turkey, WHEN I’M DONE DYING follows Fehmi as he struggles to free himself from the tight grip of his destructive addiction. (In Turkish with subtitles) — G.S.
