Bursting into the film like a fireball, Kelly returns to her native Irish town—a wild vagabond, soiled and desperate, clearly having lived in a state of complete oblivion. By all accounts, she’s been missing for an entire year. And when she randomly shows up at the respectable door of her sister Lauren and her husband, she’s met with a furious tornado of questions, emotion, and intense resentment. WILDFIRE looks at the contentious family bond between two sisters bound by childhood trauma. Both are uncertain of how to navigate their pain and loss, often crashing through life to find some kind of answer. Set against a fractured, post-Brexit working class town in Ireland, the film offers a classic sampling of kitchen-sink realism, ignited by two searing, red-hot performances at its center. At once painful and moving, this portrait of sisterhood manages to capture the writhing, aching beauty of deep familial love. — R.J.T.
