As one of the first employees of Microsoft, Ric Weiland’s programming skills and brilliant mind contributed to the foundation of revolutionary technology that changed our world forever. Juxtaposed to his quiet, reserved nature in the workplace was his colorful, unabashed social life as a proud gay man. Although his career brought him incredible wealth, Weiland felt disinterested in his work and struggled to find meaningful purpose while enduring feelings of persistent loneliness and chronic bouts of depression. As the AIDS epidemic began to unfold and many of his friends fell victim, Weiland channeled his passion and resources into groundbreaking medical research and LGBTQ+ rights issues to use his immense affluence for good. With personal accounts from childhood classmate and colleague Bill Gates, close friends, former partners, and excerpts from Ric’s personal journal, YES I AM: THE RIC WEILAND STORY allows deeply personal insight into the complex layers of a man who brought so much good to the world but who never thought it was quite enough. —A.B.
