Within the confines of San Quentin State Prison, an annual marathon called the 1000 Miles Club takes place each November. Though the participants are currently incarcerated, they put foot to dirt and concrete 105 times around the track and become champions, determined to be more than a statistic. —M.G.

A life sentence at California’s San Quentin prison may as well be a death sentence for some. But for members of the 1000 Mile Club, a running club of inmates who spend an entire year training to run a marathon around their prison yard, purpose and redemption can still be found behind bars. Veteran marathon runners coach the men to complete the grueling feat: 105 laps of dirt, gravel, and pavement with no change in scenery. Through their arduous journey around the track, 26.2 TO LIFE reveals inmates’ personal accounts of remorse, self-acceptance, and ambition to be more than the number on their uniform. A humanizing depiction of incarcerated individuals, this film elicits a depth of compassion for those often forgotten —A.B.
