Film Overview

A warm, captivating love story for (at last) adults, 84 CHARING CROSS ROAD teams up the supberb acting talents of Anne Bancroft and Anthony Hopkins as lovers whose transatlantic courtship flourishes through a 20-year correspondence. Once again, as established by his successful screen version of BETRAYAL, director David Jones shows his perceptive skill with emotionally-charged yet delicate drama. This lively story of a Brooklyn writer and a book collector's relationship with a London bookseller first enchanted readers of Helene Hanff's book and delighted audiences of the stage hits in London and New York. Helene (Bancroft) is an idiosyncratic, New York-entrenched Anglophile who begins sending esoteric requests for beloved old editions to a quaintly eccentric English bookstore in 1949. Frank (Doel (Hopkins) is the prim-and-proper proprieter with a wife and two daughters. Sharing a love of literature, Helene and Frank soon find that their correspondence has come to mean much more than an exchange between customer and supplier. As different as they are alike, the pair engages in a love affair by mail the develops into a unique and lasting emotional bond. Bancroft and Hokins capture all the spirit and ardor of an unusual romance that soars beyond the separation of two personal worlds to achieve fulfillment. “Genuinely moving … catches the viewer by the throat … Anne Bancroft brings Helene Hanff alive in all her dimensions, in the process creating one of her most memorable characterizations.” VARIETY
