A Home at the End of the World

What makes a home? Michael Mayer's A HOME AT THE END OF THE WORLD, adapted by Michael Cunningham from his acclaimed novel of the same name, depicts one man's journey-from 1967 to 1974 to 1982-to answer this question, to make a home for himself. From the age of nine, Bobby Morrow has always been surrounded by death. His suburban Cleveland home, where he lives with his parents and older brother, rests adjacent to the local cemetery. By his 16th birthday, Bobby sees each member of his family to a grave in that cemetery. Yet, he seeks no pity. Instead, he desires only to please others. Orphaned, Bobby moves in with his classmate and clandestine lover Jonathan Glover and parents Alice (Sissy Spacek) and Ned (Matt Frewer). When 24 year-old Bobby (now played by Collin Farrell) is still living with the Glovers, Alice and Ned encourage him to leave their home and find happiness for himself. In doing so, Bobby relocates to New York City, where he moves in with now openly gay Jonathan (Dallas Roberts) and quirky roommate Clare (Robin Wright Penn). Together, this unlikely trio reconceive the conventional home. Nuanced acting, especially by Farrell in an uncharacteristic role, and a memorable soundtrack, including classic rock tunes and an original score by Duncan Sheik, bring life to this compelling character drama. – E.J.B.
